Matthew Chambers

"Recent works"

4 novembre 2023 – 4 janvier 2024

Galerie de l’Ancienne Poste is pleased to announce its first collaboration with famous British ceramic artist Matthew Chambers. Listed by Artprice among the current artists who « renew the image of ceramics », Chambers is undoubtedly a major player on the contemporary ceramics scene. Within the gallery’s space, the viewer will be amazed by the interplay of the sculptural forms and their dizzying movement.

Viewed from the back, his pieces appear absolutely simple and sober. Their round volumes, with harmonious curves, offer a homogeneous surface without being smooth. No pattern distracts the eye; all that counts is this admirable surface work, whose sensuality is born of a velvety grain, powdered like pastel.
Assuming the sculpture has a front and a back, looking at its “front” side reveals what makes Matthew Chambers’s approach utterly unique. At the border of sculpture and design, each of his stoneware creations results from a complex construction, a skilful assembling of overlaid sphere fragments fitted or nested inside each other. Their edges outline clearly-drawn circles, lines that draw closer or move away from one another without ever crossing.
