Thomas Bohle

Thomas Bohle was born in 1958 in Dornbirn, Austria. In England in 1984, at the age of 26, Thomas Bohle sat down at a potter's wheel for the first time. This contact with clay and the experience of creating with his own hands transported him and marked the beginning of his artistic journey. In 1987, he completed a pottery apprenticeship and consolidated his experience by working in various workshops. In 1991, he opened his own studio. A study trip to Japan was followed by exhibitions in 2004 in Tokyo and Shanghai, where the artistic value of his work became particularly recognized. Influenced by ancient Chinese and Japanese ceramics, whose simplicity, harmony and softness he appreciates, Thomas Bohle also draws his inspiration from nature, architecture and music. He admires the work of Hans Coper, Lucie Rie and Pierre Bayle, and claims to be influenced by the sculptures of Constantin Brâncusi and Eduardo Chillida. Whether strictly cylindrical or highly flared, his perfectly symmetrical creations are governed by pure, regular lines. In 2006, Thomas Bohle was awarded the Bavarian State Prize. Gradually, he gained international recognition, which was confirmed by the representation of his work in London and Brussels.
IWhat interest Bohle are double-walled constructions in which the markedly different exterior and interior forms build a striking contrast that is also often accentuated by a juxtaposition of colours. The structure of the form is often conceived so as to allow the glazes to run down the vertical walls and form thick drops along the lower edge. Open-flame firing in a reducing atmosphere of 1280° allows the ox blood and celadon glazes in particular to develop their splendid beauty
His works are rare flowers blooming in the jungle of contemporary artistic production. Her creations prove that the ceramic vessel remains an artistic medium that has lost none of its topicality."
