Ursula Morley-Price

Ursula Morley-Price was born in 1936 in London and has been living in France since 1973. A graduate from London University College’s Slade School of Fine Art, she began her artistic career as a painter but discovered ceramics, which soon became her preferred medium and brought her international fame. Ursula Morley-Price’s work has been displayed in numerous solo shows in Europe and the United States, as well as in a retrospective show at the Troyes Museum of Modern Art in 2013; her works are found in many private and public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum and MoMA in New York, the Musée National de Céramique in Sèvres and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
Although Ursula Morley-Price, now 89, has nothing left to prove, she is always on the lookout for new avenues to experiment with, as evidenced by her new works, which tend towards a figurative expression never before approached.
Faithful to stoneware, Ursula Morley-Price loves its rough, imperfect aspect, the grain that catches the light and makes the object vibrate. In 2016, on the occasion of the exhibition marking the artist's 80th birthday, journalist and art critic Guillaume Morel noted that " her work is all about movement. The ceramist infuses each of her pieces with dynamism, whether twisted or helical (Twist forms). The work only exists and reveals itself fully in the space it occupies, depending on the lighting and the point of view from which it is viewed. Seen from above, for example, the seemingly figurative object can become a purely abstract creation. ".
Ursula Morley-Price has built up a unique body of ceramic work that has made her a key figure on the contemporary art scene.
Galerie de l'Ancienne Poste has represented the work of Ursula Morley-Price exclusively in France since 2013.
