Yuk Kan Yeung

November 9, 2019 - January 9, 2020

Galerie de l'Ancienne Poste closes its 2019 program with the presentation of decorated porcelain works by ceramic artist Yuk Kan Yeung (b. 1959, Hong Kong). The artist chose porcelain as her material, not because of its transparency, but rather because it provides an excellent three-dimensional base for her graphic and poetic expression. For Yuk Kan Yeung, creating ceramics is like writing poetry. Her love of literature and poetry are combined and integrated in her porcelain. Her abstract design is the best expression of her Chinese origins. Her passion for Chinese calligraphy is an essential source of inspiration for the artist. Every line and every space is a poetic composition, a magical transformation of human emotions.

Yuk Kan Yeung in Connaissance des Arts

His first exhibition in France, at the Carlin Gallery in Paris in 2005, attracted considerable attention, but the artist's growing international reputation was to be followed by a series of solo exhibitions and participation in group shows in China, Hong Kong, Europe, the UK, the USA, Australia and Korea.
For this return to France at Galerie de l'Ancienne Poste, the artist has chosen to present both a remarkable personal selection of works from the last five years and new works inspired by poetry, architecture and the search for inner peace. Colors are carefully chosen to create a balance not only between the works on display, but also within them. Yuk Kan first draws and paints on paper with a colored porcelain slip, then prints her design directly onto the thin form. This graphic technique gives each work a unique character that cannot be repeated. After the cookie has been fired, she reapplies drawings and colors to the surface to create more depth before the final firing at 1260°C in an electric kiln. The result is a three-dimensional painting on porcelain.
