Coral Memories

September 12 – November 5, 2026

Opening on Saturday, September 12, from 6 p.m., in the presence of the artist.

Galerie de l’Ancienne Poste is pleased to present the first solo exhibition in France by renowned Dubai-based Irish ceramicist Michael Rice. Through a selection of around twenty recent works, he explores the intersection of material memory and form in a series of sculptural vases that constitute a brilliantly radical body of work.

Michael Rice’s approach can be seen as a reflection on the boundaries between utilitarian objects and sculpture. Drawing from the formal vocabulary of traditional pottery - mainly vases, but also bowls and vessels - the artist shifts their scale, lending these forms a singular presence. An intensely colored glaze, with textures inspired by coral structures, metamorphoses their surface, accentuates their volume, and asserts their sculptural power. Stripped of their functional purpose, these pieces acquire a true sculptural dimension, where the memory of ceramic forms dialogues with the organic world in a resolutely contemporary artistic language.

Biography

At Galerie de l’Ancienne Poste, Michael Rice has set out to present a single “family” of pieces, so as to offer a coherent, unified group of works to a public that might not yet know him. Often large in scale, his variations on the coral vases unveil a world unlike any other. This body of work follows on from a practice which, in the last twenty years, has assumed very diverse forms. At the start of his career, Michael Rice (born 1972 in Belfast) developed a keen interest in Japanese Raku. Since then, the artist has developed several series entitled Coriolis, Extrusion, Mandala or Binary, presented in Dubai, Singapore, Belfast and Brussels. Formally and aesthetically very different, the sculptures gathered in Toucy do not, however, create a break from his former work, but instead follow the same constructive logic that makes up the common thread of all his research.
