Alistair Aynscombe-Danhieux

A native of Crewe, England, Alistair Aynscombe-Danhieux has been passionate about art since childhood, influenced as much by the research of the great ceramist Robert Deblander as by the sculptures of Henry Moore, Constantin Brâncuși, or more recently, Fernando Botero and Anish Kapoor. After travelling extensively, notably in India and West Africa, Alistair Aynscombe-Danhieux settled in the Nièvre region in 2003, where he trained at the CNIFOP in Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye, before exhibiting in Toucy, Paris and at the Cité de la Céramique in Sèvres.
His current work is an exploration of form and proportion in dialogue with the material. Abstract motifs express his ongoing quest for freedom. I work more instinctively, he explains, which allows the sculptures to come 'through' me rather than 'from' me.
Characterized by highly graphic lines, the work of Alistair Aynscombe-Danhieux (b. 1975) evokes the work of a landscape painter or calligrapher, on volume supports. A Briton living in the Puisaye region of France, his many travels have contributed to his inspiration. In his most recent works, brush-painted on the white surface of vases, he enhances marbled backgrounds with confident black lines, suggesting abstract landscapes reminiscent of the patterns formed by hard stones. His older pieces, with their round shapes and pure silhouettes, seem to be completely colonized by hypnotic labyrinthine designs, continuous motifs that seem to be generated by mathematical sequences and evoke the world of M. C. Escher.".
