Matthew Chambers

Born in London in 1975, Matthew Chambers graduated from the renowned Royal College of Art in 2004. In 2006, his work was recognized with the Ceramic Review prize at Ceramic Art London. In 2009, he was honored at the 5th World Ceramic Biennial in Icheon, Korea, and selected the same year for the Westerwald Prize of the Keramikmuseum, Germany. These years saw the emergence of striking stoneware pieces with circular shapes that immediately bring to mind the "optical eye" of a camera lens.
" Optical art is not far off. The eye is immediately drawn in, sucked in by the effects of these spirals which, however, are not spirals at all. Matthew Chambers' volumes are alternately concave and convex. In recent years, he has tended to create a diminishing, funnel-like movement, drawing the viewer's gaze inwards to the room's darkest depths.
His recent sculptures take the opposite approach, by expanding outwards. "
Guillaume Morel, journalist and art critic, excerpt from the catalog of the exhibition 2023 à la galerie.
Cited in 2023 by Artprice as one of the artists "reviving the image of ceramics today", Chambers is undoubtedly a major player in contemporary ceramics. Matthew Chambers' work can be found in major private and public collections such as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Musée Ariana in Geneva and the Musée National de Céramique in Sèvres.
Galerie de l'Ancienne Poste offered him his first major solo exhibition in France in 2023, and has represented his work exclusively in France ever since.
